About Toledo
Toledo, Ohio is the fourth largest city in the state of Ohio. It is located on Lake Erie, right across the border from Michigan. The city was first founded in 1794, but the War of 1812 caused many settlers to abandon the new territory. The city was resettled beginning in 1817, when two different syndicates bought land bordering each other in what is now the downtown area and the historic north end. In 1834, the state of Ohio and the territory of Michigan fought over Toledo and its surrounding suburbs in the Toledo War. The war was mostly bloodless, with only one human casualty. The dispute was finally settled when Michigan was given the Upper Peninsula and Ohio got to keep Toledo.
While Toledo's economic growth after the industrial revolution was mainly due to car manufacturing, today Toledo is home to many green jobs. The city has spurred the growth of the alternative energy industry. Companies such as Xunlight, a solar cell production company, are headquartered in Toledo.
Toledo is also a great place for families to visit. There are a number of attractions suitable for the whole family. A great place to start is the Toledo Zoo. The zoo has over 5,300 animals. In addition to all of the regular animal exhibits, the zoo also features Nature's Neighborhood, an exhibit that allows children to experience being an animal. Nature's Neighborhood has a petting zoo, which includes goats, dogs, birds, reptiles and many other animals. The exhibit is 100 percent hands-on for kids, with many different activities to help bring children closer to animals.
A family's next stop should be Imagination Station, a hands-on science museum in Toledo. This museum features three exciting rides: BOYO, High Wire Cycle, and Simulator Theater. BOYO allows riders to experience what it is like to be a yo-yo. The ride teaches kids about the science that makes yo-yos work. The High Wire Cycle is a rider's chance to defy gravity. The rider experiences how it feels to be 20 feet above the ground with nothing more than a two inch wire and a 275 pound counterweight keeping you there. This ride teaches how counterweights work. Simulator Theater is a virtual reality ride, which takes you in every direction, while teaching about virtual reality and perception.
